Email marketing has cruised through the ranks to now be known as one of the top marketing tools a business can have. Build an audience that is directly interested in the products and services you provide. Having an email list allows you to send your audience updates and promotions, generating more business. The backbone of email marketing is a well-crafted email list. Email lists can seem daunting to create, but with knowledge of the basics and a few tips and tricks, you can be well on your way to building the perfect list for your business.
Establishing a Main Goal for your Email List
When building an email list, the goal should be to provide your audience with valuable content. If people feel like they won’t benefit from your emails, chances are they won’t opt into receiving them.
Incentives for Email List Building
A great way to build your email list is to offer an incentive. This incentive should benefit the consumer and be directly related to your business. The goal is to grab their attention and offer something that they want enough to give up their email. Some popular incentives are ebooks, templates, checklists, promotions, or free shipping on products to name a few. For the commercial cleaning industry specifically, you could offer something like, “sign up for our newsletter to receive 10% off your first cleaning”. This gets the email, generates business, and opens the door for future business.
Surveys and Questionnaires
Incorporating quick surveys and questionnaires into your incentives can be a productive way to generate feedback from a targeted audience. For example, consider “complete our quick 5 question survey to receive our ebook”. This is a non-intrusive way to ask them a few questions to improve your business, and in turn offering something that benefits them. Remember to keep these surveys short and concise. Users are less likely to want to do something time consuming, and you want to collect their email.
Website Optimization for Email List Building
There are multiple ways that you can optimize your website to collect emails. Pop-ups are an effective marketing tool as there are many different types for different uses. Some pop-ups show up immediately when you visit a site. In our experience this isn’t the most effective. This can be a nuisance to the user and it can come off as a bit greedy. This comes off as immediately wanting something from them before giving anything. Instead, we recommend using timed, slide-in and exit pop-ups.
Timed pop-ups show up only after the user has been on your site for a specified amount of time. These can be effective because it allows the user to spend some time on your site, and if they like what they see they’re given the opportunity to opt-in to emails.
Slide-in pop-ups tend to be less intrusive to the user experience as they only take up a small portion of the screen. They still catch the eye of the user but do not seem as “desperate” as other pop-up types, and depending on the incentive can be very efficient.
Exit pop-ups use software to detect when a user’s cursor moves to the top of the screen to close out or switch tabs, and a pop-up is triggered to display on the screen. Exit pop-ups require the user to take a second to close out of the pop-up before exiting the page. Coupled with a good incentive, these can be great for email list building.
Email list building can seem like a big mountain to climb when you start from zero. With knowledge of the different tactics it isn’t as difficult as it may seem. Keep in mind that the methods outlined in this post aren’t the only ways you can build email lists. Get creative with your own marketing strategies and have fun with it. Experiment to see what works best for your company, and double down once you find what does. Always remember that in order to get an email you need to offer some sort of value, education or entertainment. Good luck with your email list building journey!
